“72% of the reported structure fires [in student housing] involved cooking equipment.” National Fire Protection Association 2007 Report

Mention the words "unattended cooking fire", "stovetop fire", "stove left on when no one was home" and virtually every Campus Fire Marshall will nod knowingly, and with concern.

"you wouldn't believe how many times I have been in an apartment, with no one home, and found the stove burners on high".

Students living away from home for the first time, lack of sleep during finals, and frequent distractions all contribute to a dangerous risk of unattended cooking fires.

CookStop was designed with college housing facilities in mind. A study break during an ‘all-nighter’ or a case of the munchies after a night of partying can become dangerous. Managers can implement cooking permissions for these situations. With CookStop, cooking can be restricted to certain hours, students are required to stay near the stove while cooking, or ask to checkout a secure key from the RA for cooking after hours.

CookStop can helps reduce the risk of unattended Cooking fires!

  1. CookStop continuously checks for movement in the kitchen.

  2. If the person leaves the room or falls asleep while cooking, CookStop shuts the stove off.

  3. While CookStop can be configured for many different levels of security, it is functional upon installation, immediately reducing the chances of an accident.
